Bill Anders

Took the Earthrise photograph on Apollo 8.

Bill Anders was lunar module pilot on Apollo 8 — a mission that had no lunar module, leaving him to run the mission’s photography and systems. Rounding the Moon’s far side on Christmas Eve 1968, he captured Earthrise, the photograph credited with helping launch the environmental movement.

An Air Force nuclear engineer by training, Anders later served as the first chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as a U.S. ambassador, and as CEO of General Dynamics. He died in 2024 flying his own vintage aircraft.
