Bill Shepherd
Navy SEAL who commanded the first ISS expedition.
Bill Shepherd came to NASA from the Navy SEALs — the first special-operations sailor selected as an astronaut — and flew three shuttle missions before being named commander of Expedition 1, the first resident crew of the International Space Station.
During 136 days aboard the young station in 2000-2001, Shepherd instituted the ship’s log tradition and pushed for the crew to be treated as a ship’s company rather than three national representatives — a culture the ISS program credits to this day.
