Edward Gibson

Skylab 4’s science pilot and chronicler of the Sun.

Edward Gibson, a solar physicist, served as science pilot on Skylab 4, spending 84 days operating the Apollo Telescope Mount and capturing the birth of a solar flare from orbit — a first for science.

He had literally written the book on the subject: his textbook The Quiet Sun was a standard reference. Gibson’s painstaking solar observations remain among Skylab’s most cited scientific legacies.
