Frank Borman

Commanded Apollo 8, the first crewed flight to the Moon.

Frank Borman commanded Gemini 7’s grueling 14-day endurance flight and then Apollo 8, the audacious 1968 mission that made his crew the first humans to orbit the Moon. His Christmas Eve broadcast from lunar orbit reached a billion people.

A duty-driven West Pointer, Borman served on the Apollo 1 fire investigation and helped redesign the spacecraft. He retired from NASA soon after Apollo 8, later serving as CEO of Eastern Air Lines.
