Fred Haise
Apollo 13 lunar module pilot; later flew the shuttle Enterprise’s approach tests.
Fred Haise was lunar module pilot on Apollo 13, enduring the freezing return to Earth while running the lifeboat systems of the lunar module Aquarius — all while fighting a kidney infection. He had been slated to walk on the Moon as commander of the later-cancelled Apollo 19.
A Marine-trained aviator and NASA research pilot, Haise went on to command the space shuttle Enterprise’s approach and landing tests in 1977, proving the orbiter could glide home from atop its carrier aircraft.
