Gerald Carr
Commanded Skylab 4, the longest American spaceflight of its era.
Gerald Carr commanded Skylab 4, the station’s final and longest crew — 84 days in orbit through early 1974, a U.S. record that stood for two decades. His rookie crew famously renegotiated an overloaded work schedule with mission control, a case study now taught in workload management.
A Marine engineer and aviator, Carr logged over 15 hours of spacewalks observing the comet Kohoutek and servicing the station’s solar telescope.
