Harrison Schmitt

The only scientist to walk on the Moon.

Harrison ‘Jack’ Schmitt, a Harvard-trained geologist, was selected in NASA’s first scientist-astronaut group and trained the Apollo crews in field geology before being assigned to Apollo 17 — the only professional scientist ever to walk on the Moon.

His trained eye spotted the orange volcanic soil at Shorty Crater, one of the mission’s signature discoveries. Schmitt later served a term as U.S. Senator from New Mexico and has remained an active voice in lunar science.
