Jack Lousma

Skylab 3 pilot and commander of the shuttle’s third test flight.

Jack Lousma, a Marine Corps aviator, served as pilot of Skylab 3 in 1973, spending 59 days in orbit and performing two spacewalks to service the station. He was also the capsule communicator who took Apollo 13’s famous distress call.

In 1982 he commanded STS-3, the shuttle Columbia’s third test flight, landing at White Sands, New Mexico — the only shuttle landing ever made there.
