Commanded Gemini IV and Apollo 9, then managed the Apollo program.
James McDivitt, an Air Force test pilot with 145 combat missions in Korea, commanded Gemini IV in 1965 — the mission on which Ed White made America’s first spacewalk — and later Apollo 9, the crucial first crewed test of the lunar module in Earth orbit.
After Apollo 9 he became manager of the Apollo Spacecraft Program, overseeing the missions from Apollo 12 through 16 before retiring as a brigadier general.
