Jim Lovell
Flew to the Moon twice without landing; brought Apollo 13 home.
Jim Lovell flew four missions — Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13 — and was the first person to travel to the Moon twice. On Apollo 8 he navigated the first lunar voyage; by 1970 he had logged more time in space than anyone alive.
As commander of Apollo 13, Lovell calmly led his crew through the oxygen tank explosion that turned a Moon landing into a four-day fight for survival, an ordeal he recounted in the book that became the film Apollo 13. He never walked on the Moon — and called the safe return his proudest achievement.
