John Young

New Nine (1962)

John Young

Flew Gemini, Apollo, and the shuttle — the only astronaut to command four classes of spacecraft.

John Young flew six missions across three programs: two Gemini flights (smuggling a corned beef sandwich aboard the first), two Apollo missions including the Apollo 16 lunar landing, and two shuttle flights. He is the only person to have piloted four different classes of spacecraft.

As commander of STS-1 in 1981, Young flew the boldest test flight in NASA history — the first crewed launch of an untested vehicle. He served as chief of the Astronaut Office for over a decade and remained NASA’s conscience on safety until his retirement at 74.
