Neil Armstrong

First human to walk on the Moon.

Neil Armstrong flew 78 combat missions in Korea as a Navy aviator and later pushed the X-15 rocket plane to the edge of space as a civilian test pilot. On Gemini VIII he performed the first orbital docking and saved the mission from a violent thruster failure.

As commander of Apollo 11, Armstrong took manual control to fly the lunar module past a boulder field and became the first human on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Famously private, he spent his later years teaching engineering in Ohio, insisting the achievement belonged to 400,000 people.
