Owen Garriott
Scientist-astronaut who logged nearly 14 EVA hours across Skylab and the shuttle.
Owen Garriott, an electrical engineering professor at Stanford before joining NASA, served as science pilot of Skylab 3, running the station’s solar observatory and performing three spacewalks totaling nearly 14 hours.
He flew again on STS-9/Spacelab 1 in 1983 and made the first amateur radio contact from space, a tradition that continues on the ISS. His son Richard later visited the ISS as a private spaceflight participant, making them the first American father-son spacefarers.
