Group 5 (1966)
Paul Weitz
Skylab 2 pilot who later commanded the maiden flight of Challenger.
Paul Weitz was pilot of Skylab 2, wrestling with the crippled station’s sunshade deployment from the open hatch of the Apollo command module during the mission’s dramatic first days in 1973.
A decade later, at 50, he came out of a desk job to command STS-6 — the maiden flight of the shuttle Challenger — and later served as deputy director of the Johnson Space Center.
