Pete Conrad

Third man on the Moon; saved the crippled Skylab station.

Pete Conrad, the wisecracking Navy test pilot, flew two Gemini missions and commanded Apollo 12, greeting the Moon with ‘Whoopee! Man, that may have been a small one for Neil, but that’s a long one for me.’ His pinpoint landing beside the Surveyor 3 probe proved precision lunar targeting.

As commander of the first Skylab crew in 1973, Conrad led the daring repairs — including a muscle-powered tug on a jammed solar wing — that saved America’s first space station. He considered it his greatest contribution.
