Ron Evans

Apollo 17’s command module pilot; performed a deep-space EVA on the way home.

Ron Evans flew combat missions over Vietnam from carrier decks before joining NASA, and served as Apollo 17’s command module pilot, mapping the Moon from orbit aboard the command module America while his crewmates worked below.

On the way home, Evans performed a 66-minute deep-space EVA nearly 180,000 miles from Earth, retrieving film canisters from the service module — one of only three spacewalks ever conducted in deep space.
