Sergei Krikalev

Flight engineer of ISS Expedition 1; once held the record for most time in space.

Sergei Krikalev, a spacecraft engineer and champion aerobatic pilot, was stranded aboard Mir for 311 days in 1991 while the Soviet Union dissolved beneath him — returning to a different country and earning the nickname ‘the last Soviet citizen.’

He flew on the first joint U.S.-Russian shuttle mission, the first ISS assembly flight, and as flight engineer of Expedition 1. Across six flights Krikalev accumulated 803 days in space, a world record at his retirement, plus more than 41 hours of spacewalks.
