New Nine (1962)
Tom Stafford
Commanded Apollo 10 and the American half of Apollo-Soyuz.
Tom Stafford flew two Gemini rendezvous missions and commanded Apollo 10, flying the lunar module to within nine miles of the Moon’s surface in the full dress rehearsal for Apollo 11.
In 1975 he commanded the American crew of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, clasping hands with Alexei Leonov in orbit — the two remained close friends for life. A three-star general, Stafford spent decades as NASA’s most trusted senior advisor on human spaceflight.
