Vance Brand
Apollo-Soyuz command module pilot who went on to command three shuttle flights.
Vance Brand, a Marine aviator turned civilian test pilot, flew as command module pilot on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975, the final flight of an Apollo spacecraft.
He commanded three shuttle missions, including STS-5 — the shuttle’s first operational flight — and flew his last mission at age 59. Across four flights he logged 746 hours in space without ever, by his own cheerful admission, getting to walk in it.
