Yuri Gidzenko

Soyuz commander who flew the first ISS crew to the station.

Yuri Gidzenko, a Russian Air Force test pilot, spent 179 days aboard Mir in 1995-96 before commanding the Soyuz TM-31 spacecraft that carried Expedition 1 to the International Space Station on October 31, 2000.

Aboard the station he activated the life support and docking systems that made the outpost habitable. He returned to the ISS in 2002 as commander of a Soyuz taxi flight, logging three spaceflights in total.
